The year was 2019 and I was absolutely sure the capital of Australia was Sydney.
I said it in front of a group of colleagues, with the quiet certainty of someone who has no idea they're about to look foolish. "Sydney. Obviously."
The pause that followed was not comfortable.
It's Canberra, in case you're wondering — a compromise city built specifically for the job after Sydney and Melbourne couldn't agree on which of them should have it, officially becoming the seat of government in 1927. Butterfield and Metcalfe's framework suggests that a confidently held wrong answer generates a genuine, felt sense of surprise the moment it gets corrected. And surprise functions as a powerful cognitive tag on whatever information follows.
When you're genuinely certain about something and then discover you're wrong, your brain registers that mismatch as unusual. Something unexpected happened. Your internal model didn't match reality. That gap between expectation and outcome gets processed more deeply than a low-stakes correction would ever warrant.
Think of it this way. If someone sends you a list of edits on a document you barely skimmed, you'll probably skim the edits too. But if someone corrects a document you worked on for three weeks and were genuinely proud of? You're reading every note twice.
This has an implication most people miss entirely: the mistakes that embarrass you most are often the ones you're learning from fastest.
What This Means for How You Actually Learn

The Caveat That Changes the Entire Application
The hypercorrection effect depends on the error being corrected — with clear, unambiguous feedback.
A confidently held wrong belief that never gets corrected doesn't fade on its own. It doesn't become less wrong because time passes. In fact, the opposite tends to happen — a strongly held wrong belief, left unchallenged, tends to become more resistant over time, not less. You never had the surprise moment. The tag was never applied.
The quality of feedback matters as much as its presence. Vague correction — "that's not quite right" — doesn't create the same recalibration moment as specific, unambiguous feedback that tells you exactly what was wrong and what the right answer is.
